Dantz Retrospect 6.5 for Windows Small Business Server includes some sophisticated features but only entry-level accessibility. Dialog boxes walk you through every backup process-an approach that's comforting at first but will grow cumbersome once you get your sea legs. Retrospect 6.5's interface is minimal, with a set of expandable menus down the left-hand side of the screen, including tabs for Backup, Restore, Automate, and Reports. The software configuration includes the ability to set passwords and schedule regular backups. It's just as simple to identify where to store your backup. With an Explorer-like interface, Dantz Retrospect makes it easy to choose what you'd like to back up, whether it's a shared network folder on a client's computer or local drives on the server hosting Retrospect. Afterwards, it takes you into your first backup job. When you run Retrospect for the first time, it asks you for the product's serial number and offers to register the product. Dantz Retrospect 6.5 was by far the fastest-loading application we tested and the only one that didn't require a reboot. Like many single-user products, it asked during installation on our test server whether to load the recommended installation or a custom configuration instead. Dantz Retrospect 6.5 for Windows Small Business Server has the feel of a solo, client-based PC application that's been adapted on the back end for the multiple-system world of server-based backup. Instant scan would actually be much better if i could set it to ignore certain volumes and keep it scanning only those folders i am backing up, so I think it is already a little too simplified, and I am sure most people here would agree.Best known for its single-PC and small-workgroup backup products, Dantz aims higher with Dantz Retrospect 6.5 for Windows Small Business Server. I just wanted to be clear that removing the disable preference in the future would be the wrong way to go - hopefully you were just saying the process itself shouldn't have to be extensively managed, not that it should be integrated into the program with no options to disable it. Retroisa was running at 1.4Gb (real memory), and i don't have a massive amount of storage hooked up, and also I am only backing up 3 folders right now. We need to keep control over any process that is going to passively take more than 1 GB of real memory to run. Retrospect is too complicated for some user who is used to time machine or some product like that, but it is good for those of us who need to have extensive control over our backups. Anyone who is using your software is most likely technically aware. I strongly disagree that your customers would want that. We have been listening to customer feedback here and through Support, with additional improvements and features planned towards that goal. Those are the three steps that the preference pane goes through.įor Instant Scan the goal is for it to be as transparent (invisible part of the "kernel" of Retrospect) as possible while simply making the scan phase of backups faster, so that users don't need to be aware of and don't need to manage Instant Scan. You can also unload the process with "sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/" and disable it by updating that plist with the "Disabled" key having the value "true". The RetroISA process won't unload, but it should stay at 0% CPU. If you prefer to stop Instant Scan manually to avoid the engine downtime, you can add "StartRetroISA=0" to the bottom of /Library/Application Support/Retrospect/retro_isa.ini. The engine installer will upgrade the preference pane and the engine itself. Since the button isn't working on your system (we'll look into this), you can get to the installer by right-clicking on the application, choosing "Show Package Contents", and navigating to Contents > Resources > updater you should see "Retrospect Engine Installer.pkg" in that folder. ![]() The server installer is bundled inside the Retrospect application.
